I was amazed I actually got through this one; it reads like a history textbook, but gives good insight into the Elves of the Lord of the Rings.

This book was unbelievable, it kept me entertained the entire time and set up everything for The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series. Everything was put into perspective, like the origin of characters and races. It talked about the first 3 ages and introduced the Fourth Age which is obviously very important. Now I see why it is such a popular book.

This is like a history book about Middle Earth. I think you can skip the Children of Hurin if you've read this.

If Tolkianism was a religion, this would be its Old Testament, "begats" and all. I found the beginning quarter slightly boring. I could not get the Valar's names straight to save my life. But from the point that the Silmarils were made onward, I LOVED IT!

You have to be a serious LOTR fan if you want to read this book. Some of it was written after Tolkien died by a ghost writer and that part sucks and reads like a history textbook. But there are chapters that are absolutely amazing, like the chapter on Beren and Luthien. That chapter makes the rest of the book worth reading.
