This was my second Anne Rice read (the first was Vittorio the Vampire) and I must admitt i fell in love with it from the first couple of pages. It really drew me in. Beautifull crafted and absolutely exquisite. I love vampires, and, having started to write my own novel about them, I found this very inspiring. Thorougly enjoyable read, and much more deep and thoughftul than Vittorio the Vampire.

Haunting, beautiful, elegant -- this novel shaped how vampires are represented in modern fiction. This is an excellent novel, it is poetic and mysterious and a worthy successor to the vampire mythos. Sadly, the rest of the "Vampire Chronicles" series fails to live up to this novel.

Read it when I was 16, in the run-up to the film's release (there was a long delay between US film release and South African film release, and I was gagging to see the film, so I decided I might as well read the book in the something-stupid six month or so gap between US and SA release). Anne Rice is a very talented author. I personally enjoyed this book. She uses historical facts in her writing which is quite interesting and i found that she created a lot of deep thoughts and emotions in this book. Things that you wouldn't think about every day. As I haven't read many of her other work i can't really compare, but it was a great read over all!

For a very long time, Anne Rice was my favorite author in the world and it all began with this book. Lestat, Louis and Claudia propelled me on to read almost everything she wrote, even some of the books that I probably didn't need to read in high school. After "Queen of the Damned", the vampire books were never quite as good, but the first three still hold a place in my cold, black heart. ;)
