Too bad Stephen King took the title Misery cause it would have fit perfectly. Splitting him into two people, three if you count him as a human. All three lives having no redeeming quality that I could find. Good book, but depressing.   hide

Anne Rice at her very best, and doing what she used to know how to do...and that is write a wonderful epic. This book is where the series of the Vampires begins, and once you read this you will want to go find the whole series and throw yourself under the covers every night just to sit by a lamp and find out what will happen next to her beloved characters! Very seductive book.

When I read this as a teenager I was intrigued. But upon reflection I realized what I hated was the eroticizing of the vampire. While there is an interesting story and interesting characters and history, settings etc, I found that the re-imagining and emotional access to the vampires was unsettling to me.

Awesome book, One of the best vampire novels in ages! - I got it (lst time) when I was in Florida on vacation in 1976 and was thoroughly engrossed reading it on the plane for 2 hours. I have re-read it many times since and introduced it to my daughter once she was old enough to read it. Now she's a fan and loves it as much as I do. Not much of a fan of the film as I think they could have...more

It's a highly subjective account of a vampire's life, given to a reporter who really doesn't know what he's getting himself into. Anne Rice Was the author who actually started today's Vampire novel (and movie) craze. The first in a series. So well done you forget it's only a scary and frightening story.
