I first read Tolkien as a youth (say, oh, 7th grade). I have read the series at least twice since - definitely one of my favorites.

I first read these books when I was young, my dad kept pushing them on me. I have read many books that I put on a favorite list, but these books are my true favortites. Something in them just speaks to me and I could read them over and over again.

If there's any advice I can give any reader who dives into the Lord of the Rings series it's this:
READ THE HOBBIT FIRST!!! I'm always amazed and a little stunned when people tell me they read the Lord series and not the Hobbit. It's like they read a book without reading the first chapter. The Hobbit is the first chapter. How can you cite Lord of the Rings without knowning about...more

READ THE HOBBIT FIRST!!! I'm always amazed and a little stunned when people tell me they read the Lord series and not the Hobbit. It's like they read a book without reading the first chapter. The Hobbit is the first chapter. How can you cite Lord of the Rings without knowning about Smog the Dragon? It introduces you to the Ring. It introduces you to Gollum. It introduces you to the Hobbit world, to the Wizard and pretty well everything and anything which has any importance in the series. If you read the series, you must read the Hobbit.   hide
