I love the detail and coherence of the world that Tolkein created, and the fact that , while it is clearly fantasy, it doesn't flaunt the magic etc, making it all the more realistic. Favourite characters? Very hard to pick, but probably Aragorn (even before Viggo Mortensen!), Eomer, Eowyn and Faramir. And, for the record, I also love the films - they are entirely true to the heart and soul of the book, and all the narrative changes make sense to drive the story forward in a visual, faster-moving medium.
