Tolkien was known to have said that nothing he created could be captured in a film, it exists only in scrolls and imagination. I whole heartly agree with him. The films yes, maybe superb! yet these books are so INCREDIBLE!..x At twelve years old I became immersed within Tolkien's fantasy genre. These books are classic in the works of literature. The guy was a genius! one of my childhood hero's for sure! My imagination grew and grew from these stories of gentle hobbits, elves, fearless wizards et al. Tolkien's writing today, even decades later remains evocative and descriptive. Ageless adventures -- it makes me smile to think i'll be re-reading them in my 50/6070/80's!! :)) Tolkien's characters get a hold of you so quickly, that it's not long before you're living, breathing, loving or fighting them. Totally brilliant!...xx   hide

I have loved the Lord of the Rings for years - and as re-read it I always seem to get more from it than before. I love the detail and coherence of the world that Tolkein created, and the fact that , while it is clearly fantasy, it doesn't flaunt the magic etc, making it all the more realistic. Favourite characters? Very hard to pick, but probably Aragorn (even before Viggo Mortensen!), Eomer, Eowyn and Faramir. And, for the record, I also love the films - they are entirely true to the heart and soul of the book, and all the narrative changes make sense to drive the story forward in a visual, faster-moving medium.   hide

so, let me get this straight... a bunch of white guys walk into another country to get rid of some junk they don't want, and on their way, they slaughter a load of 'savage' natives, and their leaders, oh, and a dragon or three, as it is a 'fantasy' of course (rolls eyes), the words 'destiny', 'fate' and 'chosen one' are uttered a bunch of times by senile old men and women living alone in forests. a bunch of other guys are referred to as 'evil' and then all the protagonists feel a whole lot better about themselves for slaughtering hundreds of people, and then they all go home for tea and crumpets... wow.. riveting good yarn that is..   hide

I re-read this series over and over again, just so I can pleasure myself with the rich detail, Tolkien provides. But now, down to buisness...here's the debate; which was the best: The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers or The Return of the King? The Hobbit was excelent on all levels of litriture, and is a preticular emblum of book history. The Fellowship of the Ring was amazing too... The Two Towers I found was just a bridge to get to the end. (Mind you, it was still REALLY good) And the Return of the King was spectacular. I honestly can't for the life of me decide....   hide

These books are dense but Classic. I've read them 3 times. As an english major you can't help but appreciate the detail, symbolism and themes. It is very complex, and very worth reading. I love these books! beware though, the fellowhip of the ring is hard to get through for the first 100 pgs....once you get through it, things pick up.   hide
