Everyone should read this book and never forget how this country fought to liberate african americans, but truly it would be unfair to state that it was a war between good and evil as there were honorable men who fought courageously for what they believed to be a noble cause.

Shaara's book is like watching history unfold. It's terribly well researched and It's likely the most accurate historical fiction ever written. I think what is most potent about this book is that you feel the loss of war as the book describes it to be. It makes you want to appreciate life that much more. Thankfully, there is very little in the way of battle description. Great book,...more

I think what is most potent about this book is that you feel the loss of war as the book describes it to be. It makes you want to appreciate life that much more. Thankfully, there is very little in the way of battle description. Great book, and a great exploration of both the northern and southern mentality.    hide

Beautifully written.  I went to the battle sight after reading the novel and I could see it all--in carnage and heroism on both sides.
