The alliterative verse of Tolkien in "The Lay of the Children of Hurin" is absolutely stunning. It is so sad that this Anglo-saxon poetic form was decimated by the arrival of the Norman French, and but once revived by Tolkien. When a professional linguist turns to poetry, the result can either be overwhelming or magnificent. The Lays of Beleriand fall into the latter category.
