Harry Turtledove is good writer, not a great one. He is imaginative, though, and that makes up for a lot. His stories mix in the right amount of history with "what if-story." This one is set at the end of WW1, and the teams were a little different: the US and Germany vs. England, France, the Confederate States of America.
