The book I wish I had written, this is kind of like "America: The Book", but focusing on our nation's history rather than its political institutions.  I received this as a Christmas present when I was 12 or something and thought it was amazing the first time I read it.  The book I wish I had written, this is kind of like "America: The Book", but focusing on our nation's history rather than its political institutions.  I received this as a Christmas present when I was 12 or something and thought it was amazing the first time I read it.  I have since read it cover to cover at least 4 or 5 more times and it is even funnier now that I know more about American history than in 1995.  Pretty much as good as a fake history book can be.

Best Part: The running "Women and Minorities" gag.   hide

The history of America, told Dave Barry style. It will keep you in stitches until the very end, and you may or may not learn anything factual here. One of the greatest humorists of our times, this is one of my favorites he's written so far.

Reading this book is much better than doing ab crunches. You'll come out looking like Bruce Lee with so much laughing. Quite goofy fun but then again, aren't we all goofy.

The book itself is a parody of American (as in USA) history and a bit of global stuff added in.

My first introduction to Dave Barry, a hilarious perspective on history in which he assigns his son's birthday (coincidentally the same as mine) as the date on which all hysterical--er, historical events happened because he's too lazy to look them up. (I read this almost twenty years ago, but I still remember one of his best word definitions. He refers to the pioneers who first set off into the...more
 My first introduction to Dave Barry, a hilarious perspective on history in which he assigns his son's birthday (coincidentally the same as mine) as the date on which all hysterical--er, historical events happened because he's too lazy to look them up. (I read this almost twenty years ago, but I still remember one of his best word definitions. He refers to the pioneers who first set off into the wilderness to explore and settle our country as "hardy," meaning not very bright, lol. Of course, it's funnier the way he tells it.)   hide
