The fact they dismiss creation 'science' proves they work from a rational viewpoint. There acceptance of prehistory and evolution as fact shows they have a realistic rather than fantastical view of reality.

The introduction to this book has a very nice history of how uniformitarianism came about in the 19th century and how catastrophism has now returned to popularity. Unfortunately, the authors accept evolutionary biology and prehistory as fact rather than theory and do not discuss creation science at all other than to dismiss it.
