That's one of the best books I've come across. I've read it 3 times already and every time I read it is an amazing experience. No book has ever touched me the way that one has. It's a beautiful and painfully honest narrative of a young man looking for his place in the world. I'm enamored with it.

I read this book for the first time when I was 13.  Then I read it again every year after that for too many years to remember.  Later on, in The Princess Bride, Goldman mentioned that no one bought it, or liked it.  I immediately wrote him a letter telling him how much it had mattered to me.  He actually wrote back.  It's not his best book by any means but it was what I needed to read for a...more

Like the Princess Bride? Same guy, and this is nothing like that. I think this was his debut novel, but what a debut. Want to learn to write? This is a good start. A succinct little lesson in how to organize a good story, characterization, much more. Learn about humour and pathos, and how to combine them. No extraneous crap, just good storytelling. A very surprising little book.

I just re-read this book and I remembered why I loved it so. This was a book I read because William Goldman wrote the Princess Bride and I enjoyed that so much that I picked up The Temple of Gold his first novel. The Temple of Gold I have always preached would be a better novel to read in place of Catcher and the Rye. It has similarities to Catcher but I find Temple of Gold to be a much easier...more

The Temple of Gold I have always preached would be a better novel to read in place of Catcher and the Rye. It has similarities to Catcher but I find Temple of Gold to be a much easier and exciting read.
I always thought they should teach this book in school in place of Catcher in the Rye. I loved it!   hide

I read this book 5 years ago, and its one of my favs. Its not depressing, he might hve failed everyone around hi, but in reality he didn't. everyone expected him to be what he didn't want. the heart break with annebala was the reason for everything, but no one helped him at that time and when ZOCK came to help him, it was quite late. I love this book, but some how I have lost it. If...more
