Most alternate histories that I've read seem to mostly be technical exercises and self-indulgent giggles at "what might've happened" to famous people. Pavane is one of the few that drops you comletely into the mindset and culture of a world like ours but strangely different... Anyway, the thrust is that the Spanish Armada managed to win back in 1588 (with a little help from an assassin doing away with QE1) and England, and most of Europe, is consequently now Catholic. Pavane is breathtaking and gorgeously written. Do yourself the proverbial favour.   hide
