Macon is so endearingly odd...I could relate! A wonderful journey with many "so weird but so true" insights...half the time you don't know whether to be frustrated with Macon or to laugh at him ...but you know you're going to stick with him to the end.

This is one quirky book - I loved it!  The movie is great too!  William Hurt and Gina Davis are great in it.

Very well written like all of Tylers' books and the characters were very very intriguing and real. I liked the book.

This is my favorite Anne Tyler.
She is a master (mastress?) of character development.  You come to KNOW the people in her stories. 
The main characters are a family of 3 brothers and 1 sister who live in the family home.  They are odd, their routines are odd, and I think of them each as a friend.  But their brother is the main character, and his story is
heartbreaking.
One of my all time...more

It's been a few years since I read this book, and I still remember it in great detail, which is unusual for me. Macon Leary is an obsessive-compulsive neat-freak travel writer who hates to travel (his schtick is that he writes books for business travellers who also hate to travel, letting them know where they can find a Best Western in London, a Denny's in Tokyo, etc.).  It's been a few years since I read this book, and I still remember it in great detail, which is unusual for me. Macon Leary is an obsessive-compulsive neat-freak travel writer who hates to travel (his schtick is that he writes books for business travellers who also hate to travel, letting them know where they can find a Best Western in London, a Denny's in Tokyo, etc.). After his son is tragically killed, his marriage falls apart. His subsequent relationship with a divorced mom who initially seems totally ill-suited to him is the best odd-couple story in all of literature, for my money.   hide
