Baxter is a new source of entertainment for me, whereas I've read everything from Sir Clarke.
The story was interesting. Since reading this book, I've picked up the others in the series, and a couple of more from Baxter.
The style of telling two stories at the same time, each taking place in a totally different venue (time, space) is something both authors seem to share....

Much of this plot is similar to 2001. But on the other hand, it has nothing to do with that story. They just share the common theme of alien influence on humans.
One critical factor in my evaluation of a book - is the ease of reading. This and the others in the series are easy to read. Whether you find the plot is good, simple, complicated, or just plain silly - the story telling is excellent, which forgives a lot of negatives in my opinion.
