Alison Weir once again proves herself one of the best writers of medieval and Renaissance English royal history. She goes out on a bit of a limb in this one, theorizing that Edward II was not executed but escaped to Italy. But she presents some pretty convincing circumstantial evidence. I'm not 100% convinced, but I'm not thoroughly unconvinced. More importantly, an honest portrait of one of...more

a sympathetic portrait of a much-maligned queen. Her defense of Isabella is well-research (that all-important quality in historical nonfiction), and the work is a coesive, complete account of Isabella's life. However, her arguments for Edward II's survival don't convice me.

Alison Weir provides a fascinating interpretation of the facts surrounding King Edward II, Queen Isabella, Piers Gaveston, and Hugh le Despenser. If you have already made up your mind about these medieval figures and are closed off to any evidence that proves you wrong, then maybe this book isn't for you. This book doesn't claim that Isabella is innocent of everything history accuses her...more

This book is an extremely interesting and thorough look at Isabella's life. Some people may find it a bit biased in Isabella's favor. Her theory about what happened to Edward II is very interesting! I was waiting for that the whole time I was reading. The other part of this book that I LOVE is the passive-aggressive letters between the King and Queen when she ran away to France with their...more

Quite disappointing due to the lack of direct evidence of her and so much of the book discusses household accounts etc. Hrdly gripping stuff.

As always, Alison Weir's well-researched and well-written books on Tudor and medieval kings and queens are a joy to read. In this book, Weir sets out to rehabilitate the image of Queen Isabella, who history says cheated on, overthrew and then murdered her husband Edward II. Weir paints a more sympathetic portrait and provides evidence that Edward II in fact survived. I'm not sure I buy all of her...more

Not quite the story you saw in Braveheart (surprised?). Well written and researched, as is Weir's style.
