Saving Fish from Drowning: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle)

The plot is very interesting. The tone sets the the story in its proper pace, and the characters give life to this story about a mystical excursion. The point of view - the first person omniscient narrator is a wonderful choice for telling this story.

I wanted to finish this, but i put it down and couldn't bring myself to pick it back up again. Too many "Laverne and Shirley moments" of knowing something awful is going to happen to ignorant people, and then watching it happen. I hope it got better near the end. I just wimped out and couldn't get there.

Different from the other Amy Tan books I have read. However, the more I got into it the more I enjoyed it. The themes of perception and reality are presented sometimes comically and sometimes darkly depending on the perspective taken. Overall, I liked the book and it definately made me want to research Burma.

I'm reading it right now, and it appears to be different from all the books i've read so far. I wonder how Amy Tan has managed to combine 10 11 genres into a single book... and with such mastery! I'm really impressed... I would love to read her other books aswell. :-)
