more Clamp is a writing art team consisting of Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Satsuki Igarashi, and Tsubaki Nekoi, who got their start work on doujnishi (fan comics), and have gone on to create some of the most popular manga released in the US. Among their series are Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Tsubasa.
XXXholic is not exactly what one might expect from the title. For one thing, the book has a Teen (13+) rating, and the subject matter does not directly involved either obscenity or alcohol. It is, however, a book with strong themes of addiction, recovery, and the influences that can control a person's life. It also explores the idea of inescapable fate, or hitsuzen.
The story focuses on Kimihira Watanuki, a young man who is cursed with the ability to see horrible spirits, that seem to be visible only to him. When he is strangely drawn to the home of a sorceress named Yuko, he is offered a chance to free himself from his curse, but he must work for Yuko (and the two rather odd girls who live in the witch's shop) in order to pay for his release. He must help Yuko as she grants wishes for various clients, sometimes with dire and unforeseen consequences.
The story in XXXHolic stands alone, but there are some crossovers and references to Cardcaptor Sakura and Tsubasa. A well-written section of notes at the end of the volume serves to catch up readers unfamiliar with Clamp's other work.
The first volume contains plenty of plot developments to keep the story interesting. Much is left unanswered, but this was a very satisfying beginning to a series that has a nice mix of powerful themes with touches of humor.
