This book was fantastic, especially on audio. I really liked the juxtaposition of Nelson's navy with dragons and how that society would be changed by this new kind of fighting force. If C.S. Forester wrote fantasy, he'd have written something like this.

Guilty pleasue time. I am a fan of Patrick O'Brien, and Cornwell to a lesser degree, so I can appreciate a really well written historical novel. I'm NOT such a huge fan of traditional fantasy (elves and dwarves and dragons etc.). So when I had a colleage recommend this series (there are three more, two completed and one imminent), I just picked up the first one used on AMAZON. I was...more

Wow, this novel was very impressive. I loved how Novik dealt with human nature and reflected it onto these giant mythical creatures - dragons! This must be the first dragon story I've experienced that dealt with draconian personalities and thought processes in so much detail! I can't wait until this becomes a trilogy of movies, especially since it felt so filmic as I practically read this from...more

My teenage daughter recommended this book (I later found that she hadn't yet finished it). It's set in an alternate world similar to our own, except that it contains dragons that are intelligent, but used for military purposes in the equivalent of the mid 1800s. The story centers around England during an impending invasion by Napoleon. It's an odd story, to say the least, but...more

A very fun read if not particularly deep, at least not after the first book. It is a historical fiction/fantasy, but the fantasy part of it is very historical feeling rather than mystical. Also it is a really easy read, and not too long, so not a huge time commitment.

I enjoyed this book so much, being a fan also of the Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian. This one is British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, only with dragons added as fighting animals with pilots and many adventures. Temeraire, the dragon protagonist is graceful and eloquent and tremendous. I just bought book #4.

i really enjoyed this, and plan to read the next 4 books in the series. it isn't deep but the dragons are great and the alternate history is enjoyable. might end up as one of the few books that all the teen-and-up readers in our family agree was a good read.
