His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, Book 1)

This book was fantastic, especially on audio. I really liked the juxtaposition of Nelson's navy with dragons and how that society would be changed by this new kind of fighting force. If C.S. Forester wrote fantasy, he'd have written something like this.

I was astonished at what a wonderful "guilty pleasure" read this series is. Set in an alternative Napoleonic era where Dragons are party of reality (and history has, for the most part, run the same course it has in our timeline), the series really sets a great historical tone. The main character, Laurence, is no Jack Aubrey but he might have been cut of the same cloth. Miss Novak has really hit on a winner here, and I greatly look forward to the fourth installment.   hide

I must say this is the finest book about dragons that I have ever read. Well done!

It is a very good and different book. If you like reading about dragons and kings try it.

Wow, this novel was very impressive. I loved how Novik dealt with human nature and reflected it onto these giant mythical creatures - dragons! I can't wait until this becomes a trilogy of movies, especially since it felt so filmic as I practically read this from cover to cover in a really short amount of time - I usually don't read, or take forever doing so. A very fun read if not particularly deep, at least not after the first book. It is a historical fiction/fantasy, but the fantasy part of it is very historical feeling rather than mystical. Also it is a really easy read, and not too long, so not a huge time commitment.

I enjoyed this book so much, being a fan also of the Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian. This one is British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, only with dragons added as fighting animals with pilots and many adventures. Temeraire, the dragon protagonist is graceful and eloquent and tremendous. I just bought book #4.
