I enjoyed this book even though it was obviously written from the start as the beginning of a series. The book is set in England during the Napoleonic wars and is about a rare breed of dragon and his accidental captain (handler). It's a good book to read when you just want to escape and not have to think too much.

A neat idea for a novel. I've not read the next few novels, but I assume that the conceit (not explicitly stated in this one) is "What if the warriors of ancient and medieval times had developed a symbiotic relationship with the dragons of yore, rather than slaying them? What would the Napoleonic Wars have looked like then?" I love the way that Novik develops the dragons' characters - they are...more

I must say this is the finest book about dragons that I have ever read. Well done!

It's a good read, fantasy mixed with Napolean era. The plot starts out slow and stays that way throughout the whole book: I was waiting for action, and when it came, it was over fast. However, I liked character development and the continuous plot without illogical twists. The idea itself is great and I hope Novik develops it further in the series.

If the Napoleonic wars had aerial capability - in the form of dragons - what would that look like? Told from the point of view of an unwilling aerial captain, the story is staightforward and pleasant. The characters are a bit stilted, but it IS set in the class-based society of the early 19th century, so you can forgive that a bit. I just read this yesterday, so it's a quick read. I'll likely...more

i really enjoyed this, and plan to read the next 4 books in the series. it isn't deep but the dragons are great and the alternate history is enjoyable. might end up as one of the few books that all the teen-and-up readers in our family agree was a good read.

I enjoyed this book so much, being a fan also of the Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian. This one is British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, only with dragons added as fighting animals with pilots and many adventures. Temeraire, the dragon protagonist is graceful and eloquent and tremendous. I just bought book #4.

Enjoyable Napoleonic fantasy. I'm not sure if I should have enjoyed it as much as I did, as there are some bits that I'm certain should have caused my eyes to roll, but Novik's characters and worldbuilding overcame that.
