Really good book, although the romance sort of petered off (it didn't start out too well anyway) but added is the new and exotic twist of the Orintal territories-- very satisfying.

Not as good as the first one. Still interesting though. Novik consequently depicts world with dragons and their influence on different cultures. Although the novelty has worn off, it's still pretty engaging.

This one tends to read more like a travelogue, with the action coming in spurts here and there. It seems to be more of a character and world building book for the series.

Great read but the middle, though necessary to set up dynamics, was a little long since they spent most of the middle on a ship. but still exiting.

A pretty good follow-up to the first in this series. I occasionally lost track of who was who among the minor characters, but the story itself was fascinating. I particularly enjoyed the fact that Ms. Novik didn't shy away from the slavery issue. The "evil prince" was a tad bit too predictable, IMO, and his motives were never really explained to my satisfaction, but that is a minor...more

To me, this book focused too much on politics, make believe though they are. But it had strong development of the main characters.

Takes a while for the book to get going.

Just one long, drawn out voyage across the Indian Ocean and the south china seas. The villainy in the Prince Xiaoning is just not as complex as, oh, the unseen evil that Napoleon and his French armies are. Nonetheless, a more complex sight into the alternate world of dragons really makes up for this story, and I really found myself liking the relationship between Lawrence and Temeraire,...more
