Shocking brilliant! A must read for every father who was once a juvenile delinquent and who will do whatever it takes to protect his family. Truly a manly coming of age book. One of the best books I have ever read.

Stand By Me meets Pulp Fiction. A fast paced, engaging read. Loved it! My first Huston book. Can't wait to read Half the Blood of Brooklyn.

Toned down Charlie Huston. By which I mean, all the characters get their asses horribly kicked, but only some (as opposed to most) die. Still, a little restraint isn't necessarily a bad thing - it's probably a more enjoyable read than most of his books, but it does sacrifice some of Huston's trademark distinctiveness.

This book was simply so-so. It only caught my attention at certain times, while my mind drifted off elsewhere the rest of the times. It's not the worst book I've read, but I've definitely read better books.

Great book but also Huston's least good. That said still waaaaaaaaaay better than 99% of the dross out there.

The first stand-alone novel by crime novelist Charlie Huston, this is what “Stand By Me” would have been like if Quentin Tarantino had made it. This book is gritty and funny and fast-moving, with an ending that is simultaneously one of the most grotesque and strangely heartwarming I’ve ever read.

Not Huston's best. The dialogue is good yes, but these characters were not near as interesting to me as Henry Thompson or Joe Pitt. Stephen King called this book "Stand by Me" on Dexedrine, to me this was more like benedryl. Sorry Charlie, but I am looking forward to "Half the Blood of Brooklyn."
