Ms. Russell is just a consummate author - she will be among the classics one day (soon). This read with all of its historical information that relates to the current catastrophe in Gaza is very insightful and thought provoking.

Interesting in some passages, but overall not on the same level as "The Sparrow" or "A Thread of Grace." The beginning seemed particularly forced, with the passing reference to Bob Hope and the underdeveloped relationship between Agnes and her sister that ultimately was critical to understanding Agnes' journey. My favorite parts all involved Lawrence of Arabia and, knowing Russell's attention to...more

It tells the story of Agnes Shanklin a middle-aged American spinster in the 1920's who loses all her family in the flu epidemic after World War I. She decides to take a trip (with her dachshund) to Egypt and lands in...more
