Loved this book. So atmospheric and sort of sad, but heart warming and reassuring at the same time.

The book started out slowly, but it was all part of building upon itself to create a great read. There are many facets of the book that a person can connect with--many feelings from the characters.

I liked the way the historical facts seemlessly melded into fiction. The basic idea of following an inanimate objec through the lives of all its owners and how it developed a life of its own to become more than an object has crossed my mind with daily objects (dishes), but art was the perfect object.

I love Forster's non-fiction but her fiction varies depending on the subject matter. She has a real gift for historical fiction, however, and an insight into women's lives that makes this totally compelling. She creates empathy for every character over the book's hundred year span. Well worth it.
