This series just keeps getting better! Unlike so many fantasy series today, Novik's stories build on one another, instead of just rehashing the funny bits of the last book. The ending was wonderful and is sending me to the library ASAP to find out what happens next.

Keeping the standard set by the previous 3 books. Well done!

Cliffhanger alert!! The Temeraire series is, in short, incredible. Worth reading for fans of fantasy and historical fiction (if said historical fiction fans are looking to mix it up a little bit). The books have all ended with an eye to the future at the very least, but I have to warn potential readers that there is a huge cliffhanger at the end of this one.

Temeraire goes to Africa, and the parallels between dragons under the British crown and the slave trade in Africa create a fascinating frisson. More superb character and plot work from Novik, and a great sense that this woman knows her history. Can't wait for the next book!

If I hadn't already started an Agatha Christie mystery (read - love love love) I would be going through withdrawl. Novik has me completely entranced by her AU Napoleonic Wars era series starring the lovable dragon Temeraire and his captain, Lawrence. I had been warned that this book had a...more

Great book. If you are into dragons or the Napoleonic War then this book is for you. Want to know how these are related then read to find out!

It's a great read, a real pleasure as usual, though it does suffer some from "middle book syndrome" where it doesn't really have an end and Novik seems less concerned with concluding a sub-plot in the end rather than adding momentum to a next book. Kind of cocky, relying on your readers to love the series enough to put up with not getting a satisfying ending, but I'm pretty confident the next...more

My favorite of the series. Here you find dragons that care for the humans... hmmm. In this book we also explore the boundaries of honor and duty. Where to do the lines cross and which is more important?

This was OK, but I don't think this was good as the first three books in the series.

Exciting, but a little vague at some places.
