Det. Renko makes his 2nd appearance in Polar Star. He is out of the "party", which is devasting to normal Russian citizen. Working the slime line on the Polar Star, cleaning fish, sharing a small room with others, he tries to stay low. Then a murder happens. A dead young lady that worked in the kitchen is pulled up with a net of fish. He is called into service by the Captain. Some of the officers do not want Renko to investigate too much. Will he stop in time or risk his life to find out exactly what happened to someone he didn't even know? Interesting read. I was happy to read about his character again! hide
Excellent writing, letting the reader feel the creak and groan of the old ship, the bite of the freezing salt air, and the paranoia and claustrophobia of the Soviet system. Oh, and there's a good mystery, too.
