Well written. Much better than Aspho Fields. For some reason, the narrative lost me a few times in the first book. This book was more seamless. Character development of Marcus, Dom, Cole, Baird, Hoffman, and Mataki were very good. Even saw some development of Anya Stroud. more Well written. Much better than Aspho Fields. For some reason, the narrative lost me a few times in the first book. This book was more seamless. Character development of Marcus, Dom, Cole, Baird, Hoffman, and Mataki were very good. Even saw some development of Anya Stroud. Makes me wonder why Bernie Mataki isn't in the game seeing as how she has her own story to be told. How about it Epic? I'm former USMC and the way Traviss writes makes me wonder if she was former military also. Her bio says she was a defense correspondent, but she has such insight to the military psyche right down to the excessive foul language! My only regret is the perpetuation of Cole Train in the role of a historical caricature - namely, the always happy buck writing home to the mammy figure. Mind you, the portrayal isn't insensitive, but I would hope that racial stereotypes can be avoided. Most people likely wouldn't pick up on that though, unless you've studied African American literature (and experience life as part of the minority group). Obviously, the book doesn't have the intense action that its video game counterpart has, but this is the story the gaming media can never tell.
