This is a really interesting take on the demon possession thing, making it a story that is both personal in feel and epic in scope. The demons are not all evil, so maybe demon is not the best choice for naming them. They're more like archetypes, and the author does go into that, discussing Carl Jung at non-boring-but-adequate length. It's one of the rare books to have several genuinely...more

I like it but it wasn't a quick read, and I agree with the conspiracy theorists-turned-anti demonic commando stuff took away from the book. For being a first book it was good book and I will look for more of Daryl Gregory.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this one. I picked it up out of our recreational reading area not expecting particularly much, finally opened it a few weeks later, and then finished it over the course of a day. I really enjoyed both the story and the writing style; Gregory is good at dropping baited pieces of information that he doesn't follow up on for another fifty pages or so. I...more

Fun, fun, fun! Of course I'm biased because Daryl wrote it but I guarantee it's a page turner. Even people who don't love sci-fi/fantasy will enjoy this book (that would be me!!)

The story is told in first person by Del, a young man who was possessed as a boy. With the help...more

Got almost halfway in before it became too tedious to continue. Why oh WHY does this always happen?

A solid first novel with a uniquely sympathetic take on demonic possession. Important questions are left to reader interpretation, which I found refreshing after reading so many formulaic fantasy novels. The book falters midway (the arrival of pudgy conspiracy theorists-turned-antidemonic commandos clashes with the tone of the novel) but regains its footing to reach a satisfying...more

Daryl Gregory knows that the purpose of good science fiction/fantasy is to illuminate the human condition. There's a lot of wacky and weird and grotesque in this novel, but the main character is brutally honest and real and you come to care what happens to him. There's a little bit too much ephemera (references to current events and an extremely coy Sinead O'Connor shout-out), and you never...more
