I am almost done with this book and I could not put I down. Gram Parsons was born to wealth and because of that never seemed to take anything to seriously. He threw away opportunities (because he did not need the money) while those with him suffered (because they did). He rubbed shoulders with the best of the best in music and the movies from the late 50's until his death in...more

Well researched, dense with facts but readable narrative. Even if you’re not especially interested in Gram Parsons, this book provides a good history of mainstream rock from the mid-60s to the early 70s, as artists experimented with different less-mainstream influences. Great overview of the rock/country scene in L.A. --Sunset Strip, Laurel Canyon and small hardcore So Cal...more

The best ever! If you are a Gram fan, new to Gram, want to learn about Gram, or just love music, this is the book for you. Plenty of music history in this one. So very interesting. I knew a bit about Gram, but after this I consider myself well informed. I loved it!

well, he endears you and then lets you down. Most of all he let himself go down which is depressing- but boy, he sure could sing.

This book haunts me. The author exhaustively researched Parsons' tragic life, from birth to death. The story begins with his tragic family - a father's suicide when he was 12 years old, an alcoholic mother, a very wealthy southern upbringing, etc. The book is also chronicle of the music scene in the late 60s/early 70s. To me, it was a tragedy of a man with a vision who couldn't get out of his...more

A terrific biography of one of those rare breeds of artists whose influence, postmortem, outstrips their influence in their lifetime. What a portrait! Clearly nails the "I wanna be a star!" aspect of Gram's personality, sums up the "quickly forgotten" aspect of how Gram started country-rock but was soon dismissed and snubbed by the people he influenced. Superb summary of relationship with...more

Segments of brilliant, insightful prose. Evokes the grandeur of that Rock and Roll era, with plenty of inside stuff about music and musicianship. A few gripes about what I consider amateuristic: 1) Much speculation about sexual excesses of Parson's mother with no evidence to support it; 2) Too much negative opinion about Parson's contemporaries and imitators (Eagles, New Riders of the Purple...more
