Such a beautiful story about the enduring power of love, understanding, and friendship. Lovely writing. A new favorite.

What an extraordinary book - it had me crying at the end. Just like the title, it is bitter and sweet. I also discovered the Japanese internment in the US during WWII - I was unaware of this.

Cute book and easy read. It's the kind of book you can read pool side.

I really liked the story. Henry is trapped in his cultural identities: Chinese, American, Chinese-American. What a terrific book! A beautiful love story set during a period of time I really knew so little about. The characters came to life and the information on what the U.S. did to Japanese people at the time was eye opening for me.

Not my favorite. I liked the description of the plight of the Japanese in 1942, but was disturbed that it was in the context of 12 year olds. Henry's activities were just not believable for a child in the 6th grade.
