more This new entry in the modern urban fantasy field does away with a lot of the familiar trappings (the sassy female protagonist over-imbued with raw power) and cranks up the darkness. A lot.
The result is atmospherically more of a horror novel than the bulk of the genre, with a scary universe that H.P. Lovecraft could approve of. Characterization is rich *and realistic*, with surprising moral complexity for the genre as well (which normally pays no more than lip service to the emotional costs to what the characters must do).
Amidst this background, the plot takes off and continues unrelenting at such a pace that we have time to learn but a few scraps about the protagonist and how he ended up in this situation, but that's okay. It just increases the intensity with which I want to read the next book in the series. By this book alone, the author has earned a position on my limited 'buy on sight' list.
