an amazing and insightful text.  not angry feminism, but a really fair analysis of how the male body functions in culture.

This is a very insightful and thoughtful book about the male image.  It mostly focuses on the latter half of the 20th Century and really analyzes how TV, movies, and advertising influence our perception of the male form.  

Points off for being dated - it was written in 1998 and it really needs an update.  It's contemporary references to things like Ally McBeal are distracting and of course it...more

Points off for being dated - it was written in 1998 and it really needs an update.  It's contemporary references to things like Ally McBeal are distracting and of course it also doesn't take into account the influences of the past 10 years.  The rest though is excellent reading.   hide

It's rare to find a book that feels more like a conversation than a lecture and still maintains the level of academic scholarship that one looks for when picking up a book on the ways we understand ourselves and each other. While there is always a level of risk involved in relaying personal stories as "evidence," Bordo manages to this without losing the reader. Highly recommended.

This book had a lot of potential, but is riddled with simple errors that an editor ought to have caught. Beyond that, the scholarship is not strong, and while it includes some insights the material is generally dull and uninspiring. The topic is still worthwhile, and I would suggest anyone interested in the sociological nature of the male body look to one of the other books on the subject out...more
