more Southern gothic at its most, er, gothic. And Southern! A fascinating and unpleasant tale of Hazel Motes, a traveling preacher who hates Jesus Christ. Rebelling against his religious upbringing, Hazel preaches the gospel of the Church Without Christ, but he encounters a series of grotesques that keep pulling him back to earth. O'Connor's characters are bizarre and compelling, and at 115 pages, this book was definitely the perfect length. A mesmerizing, but upsetting read.
