An utterly amazing book; a perspective on the Civil War that I have never come across anywhere else. If the period interests you at all read this one.

Overall excellent. A little uneven in sections, but that may reflect gaps in the historical record.

Not a very uplifting book...pretty macabre in fact...but very well written. Very interesting section on the activities of the Federal Government during the reconstruction period and the establishment of the National cemetery system.

This is a truly well written, wonderful book, a must read for all Americans. If we donot understand the Civil War, we may be sentenced to relive it. Faust uses such massive research, and her writing is so clear that the reader is transported back to Civil War America. I am reading this now. Stay tuned.

Very interesting and readable discussion of the social, psychological and historical implications of the unprecedented scale of death and destruction America encountered in the Civil War. The later chapters are better.

A deeply moving look at the personal cost of the Civil War for the soldiers and for their family members left back at home. The book includes countless personal notes and excerpts from letters that really brings home the impact that this war had on the young American nation that was undergoing its greatest test since the Revolution. Highly recommended.

Typical academia restating. Only about 50 pages of unique information. Very interesting though, renewed my southern pride.
