Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress

Best of the best. If you can read it in its original language do so--if not definitely read the English version. One of my all time favorites. The book is set during the re-education movement in China (60's I think).

somehow the ending makes me feel that it is best for woman to stay ignorant.

This a wonderfully written book. The writing takes you to another time. the word pictures are so well written that you can almost smell and feel the sights and smells of the village.
