Political, cultural, historical, and religious look at slightly pre-modern Egypt in the eyes of a Cairo family. Interesting and amusing... one of my favorite series!!!

Mahfouz's trilogy depicts the transformation and progress of a once conservative patriarchal Egyptian family over half a century with subtle references to the turmoil that the Egyptian society experienced in that time period

Oh my god this book ruined my summer of joyful reading. I regret it. I am not saying it's bad but it never became friendly with me.

AMAZING - I read after my mom lived in Saudi Arabia for a year and the attacks on 9/11 to soften my heart and understand a different culture. The warmth and love in the family within this trilogy will always stay with me.  I highly recommend.
