If you pick this up thinking it will be Maus, his most accesible work, you are in for a surprise. At one time, Spiegelman's work was far outside the mainstream, experimenting with cubist ideas, time fracturing, memory, pretty much anything but straight narrative. These days he seems like the adult comicbook mainstream, thanks to his influence in magazines like The New Yorker. But 20 years...more

Spiegelman, well and truly haunted by the success he had with Maus, brings out everything but the kitchen sink in order to provide a wider frame of reference for understanding his work and his relationship to the underground comix community. There are bits of real entertainment mixed in with odd little experiments more interesting than entertaining.
