more I see that other fans of Cold Mountain (one of my favorite books of all time) really liked Thirteen Moons, but I was disappointed. Frazier got a big advance to write this book, and he clearly did the research around the period in which he writes (though the reference to kudzu and a couple of other things were a century too early), but he appeared to just create a monologue in which he fills in all the details about the flora & fauna, the Cherokee, period literature, camping craft, politics etc...creating a Zelig like character for the Carolinas of the mid-19th century, but no story. And the miraculous meeting of Clare at the end of the book (literally bumping into her in the woods),then her leaving for no reason just doesn't ring true. Cold Mountain was a lifetime achievment - Thirteen Moons comes off as what it is, a great writer got a big advance after writing a masterpiece, and tried to create another one on a schedule. Like music, it rarely works that way.
