Hmm, I'm not sure what to say about this one. It's an easy read ... the paperback is only 117 pages, and the language is not difficult. It's written beautifully, but I felt very detached from the main character, as though I couldn't quite "get" her and everything she was trying to express. I enjoyed reading this, but it left me puzzled. It's worth checking out, and it may greatly impact you and strike you as a "work of literary genius" (from the back cover). Or, it might not. I think this one depends on who you, the reader, are, and on the experiences you have had.   hide

I do not recommend this one. The author is intelligent. Her paradoxical, free flowing writing style with strong imagery was my favorite thing about this book. However, her views about society, the relationship between pleasure and pain, and the nature of love in this book are terribly unhealthy. I cannot think of anything edifying in the book, but I suppose she did not intend for it to be so.

Saw the movie first...which is awesome!! Love this time period. This is a Historical Romance that will not disappoint.

THE LOVER is a great erotic memoir of a young French girl in 1920s Saigon and the adult Chinese lover she takes on to the shock of her family and the Western community. Also great if you can find someone to read it out loud in bed with. Made into a terrific movie with Jane March and Tony Leung.

Erm, must be patient when reading it otherwise it will be a very 'tiring' book to read. Switches from first person view to third person. But gives a good overall effect to the story.
