I bought this book in desperation to understand my friend Christi's suicide. Did not help. Transported me into a very bad journey and I had to stop reading it several times. For the right person, this may be a great book. Having said that, it is not a great book for me.

Ultimate book on suicide's history. I haven't read it all yet, but really enjoyed what I read up to now. Not for anyone, though. People who are not into mentall ilnessess or at least into psychology will find it boring.

Really found this book interesting. Deals with suicide - a good clinical amount of info. Also had a great personal perspective. Often books of this nature can be too sterile but this one has some heart and emotion also. If you work in a therapy/counseling field - this is a must have for your library!

Published in 1999, Kay Redfield Jamison's book retains much information relevant today. Excellently written and heavily footnoted, the book attempts successfully to explore the many factors in suicide, especially the presence of mental illness associated with the majority of cases and attempts. Chapters are interwoven with snippets of poetry, adding to the pathos of the reading experience....more
