Old School

The protagonist of Tobias Wolff’s shrewdly—and at times devastatingly—observed first novel is a boy at an elite prep school in 1960. He is an...more

Wolff manages to avoid paying too much homage to many of the cliches inherent in prep school coming-of-age stories, and in so doing, he creates an interesting story about the adolescent quest for simultaneous significance and anonymity. Of course, I've always had more tolerance for narrators who are writers than most people, and so that aspect of Old School did not bother me. The...more

Smooth as silk, beautifully written. A tender tale about private school and a young writer competing to meet one of the great writers of the day. He falls into plagiarism but believes he has been described in someone else's work. Also a commentary on fame, honesty and dishonesty, the power of stories. Highly recommended.

Brilliantly written. Agree with many of the other reviews. However, it has to actually be enjoyed by others for many to pick it up. Although, a great book, a great author I did not enjoy it; thus the two stars. Not loving this book. I am seriously having problems reading this book, and it's due tomorrow for book club. I have to admit I do like that the characters know how one another...more

I really enjoy Wolff's writing for its depth and honesty. This book doesn't entirely encapsulate a "full experience" because it focuses so much on the writing competitions at this school, but Wolff's writing is too strong to avoid for any reason.

I enjoyed this book so much I read it in one day (not that it's so long, but still) :)I think every books and literature lover would love this book. I loved the descriptions of Robert Frost, Iyan Rand and Hamigway. and especially I liked the 3rd part and the story ending. I highly recommend this book.

A novel that reads like a short story--every single word is deftly chosen for style and impact. Speaking of choosing your words, that was a wordy description that I just gave, but anyway I loved this book. Anyone who aspires to write or simply loves writing and literature should read this book. One word of caution: I've recommended it to friends who are not as into writing as I am, and they liked...more
