Russo must have spent some time as a professor in a small, public university because he clearly understands life battling bureaucracy and working with quirky fellow faculty members. The book doesn't really have a driving plot that pulls the reader forward with the promise of resolving some mystery. Instead, he relies on the reader's curiosity about the characters to keep them involved. I...more

I could spend a great deal of time praising the plot, the characterization, the mastery of language--but, for those of you who actually know me, I'll just say that, when I finished it last night, I had no complaints. When, I ask, did I not have at least one complaint about even my favorite things?

Not his best. If you like Russo and you are looking for another dose of his superb prose and insight into how people think and tick, this is another good read. An excellent parody of higher education. While the ending was a bit unsatisfactory, this was a wonderful send up of life at a state university during the middle of budget cuts (something I know too much about....)

Funny, in a dark humor kind of way. I think that if I was a middle aged man it would be more accessible as a whole. Some moments, though, were completely believable due to past experiences.
