An amazing, haunting, and tragic look at Sudan, civil war, Africa, aid work, and western intervention. For anyone who wants to get look at why Africa is the way it is, this is a fantastic read.

Provides good background and insights into Sudan's long-running North-South war and the complicating roles of Western relationships and aid in the country's ongoing struggles - both in Darfur and in the South, where the fragile peace agreement appears to be disintegrating.

An honest account of the complexities of development of aid. Working in the industry myself I found myself identifying with frustration while simultaneously cringing at the negative similarities that can be drawn between the workers and myself. Excellent.

Very good read of Sudanese conflicts, but only goes up to 2002, so it doesn't cover the peace agreements... I didn't really like Emma, the character, and agree with one of the reviewers, that she was a narcissist and self-deluded with idealism. It was well written, however. The book is quite honest about western attempts at development, which I really appreciated.

WOW, what a story...that my first thought. loved the historical account of southern sudan..helped me to really puzzle piece everything together. also, its an extreme and unique case of an aid worker that tears you in multiple directions as you try to determine how you feel about her and her work...

Not a particular easy read, but fascinating mostly for what it says about the Sudan. Interesting especially as I had read Dave Eggers, What is the what, not so long ago. I do remember vaguely hearing about Emma; I am sure that her death was widely reported in the UK press, and on the BBC. One question though: if she hadn't been young and attractive, would there have been such a...more

In spite of the lurid cover story, this is an instructive insight into the plights of Sudan.
