Worth the read but not as good as Charlotte Gray or Birdsong. It is a bit long winded in some places, particularly with technical detail but the history of psychiatry is interesting.

I have really enjoyed Faulk's previous books, and was not disappointed by this one. It is well researched, I think the psychological theme was well presented and gave me an interesting insight into the history and evolution of theories. The relationship between the two men Jaques and Thomas is very believable in describing how we people drift in and out of friendships and how changes in...more

Very disappointing. Very long. Very dull. Oh yes, he's being clever, certainly, and he's obviously done masses of research...but I didn't feel even vaguely involved until very near the end when I found myself interested in one of the main character's children. The least enjoyable of his books to date. Hard going in places but thought provoking nevertheless. Amazing research.

Tedious. Beautifully written but tedious, and I really didn't care enough about any of the characters to bother continuing further than about half way through - which is very unusual for me.

As I read this book on the tube a drunk guy told me that I looked as if I wasn't enjoying it. Very perceptive for a drunk guy! I actually thought that Birdsong was hard work to get into ... but after 5 tries now consider it one of my top reads. this was hard to get into too but it peaked and troughed all the way through. There are moments of equisite and perceptive emotion but also long...more
