It is a fun book to read, but so SMART, funny!, the characters are still with me after reading for the first time almost ten years ago. Try to read it once a year (sometimes I read it more). One of those books (the best kind)...that when you HAVE to put it down and tend to life, you still think about the characters, as if you really know them. Do NOT let the subject matter keep you from reading-it is SO NOT "All about the subject matter" It is deeper than than on so many levels.   hide

an interesting novel about a married man who has a sex change and the impact is has on his relationship with his wife. Bojhalian's treatment is respectful and empathetic, and the characters well-developed. A good read.

Strange storyline, but interesting just the same. Thought the end was a bit predictable.

CB is a great story-teller! this one will not dissapoint.

His use of the radio interviews as the device to take us through the story is terrific, as is the perspective of the lynchpin character, college-aged Carly, whose acceptance of gender-bending seems very realistic to her generation. Living in Colorado and having read up on some of the folks coming through Trinidad for sex-reassignment, by reading this book I got an even more in-depth perspective of the process that was enlightening. wow, again.   hide

great storytelling. loved the ending.

A gripping account of a transgendered person's experience. Very touching and enlightening. Well written and fast paced, does not disappoint.

Not Bohjalian's best work, but a wonderful book nonetheless. How often are main character's transgender? Examines difficult issues of individual vs society and love vs justice. I didn't really understand the purpose of the character Carly, seemed a bit unnecessary. And the ending feels a bit far-fetched to me. But again, a nice book overall.

Very thought provoking, as are ALL of Bohjalian's novels.
