I'm almost done w/ it so I'm really excited. Its a really good bio and the author does a fantastic job of explaining what made Jesse James who he was, a murder and train robber and just down right terrorist.

To all my fellow Midwesterners, please read this book and stop admiring this piece of shit. This books makes abundantly clear that Jesse James and the Confederacy go hand-in-hand. As a Missourian, James simply gives me one more reason to love the Jayhawkers of the 1850s and 60s.

Superb. Not just a great book about James but a great book about the casual, tit-for-tat brutality of the American civil war.

Great book on Jesse James. It is great that the book does not glorify his deeds. Indeed, the author doesn't symphatize with Jesse James at all. But the book manages to make him far more interesting, by placing him in what I believe is the correct historical context. Jesse James emerges as a far more complex caracter than I had realized.

It's an interesting story and well written, but it isn't "pleasure reading" - it is really dense w/ lots of Civil War and post-war history and politics. Not my forte...

The best biography of Jesse, written by the man who later won a Pulitzer for his book on Cornelius Vanderbilt. I appreciated the way Stiles put Jesse in the context of post-Civil War America. The book is well-titled: Jesse continued fighting the Civil War long after it was over.

I skimmed this, but didn't read most of it. Take the slant of a political commentary, and argues that James must be viewed as a political figure.
