I really recommend Gogol's Peterburgian stories and his Ukranian stories. He is probably the best short-story writer there is!

Great writer and fascinating look at Russian society in the early 1800s. "The Nose" is my favorite story-- it's a post-modern tale that could just as easily have been written in 2007
