On an icy winter night an isolated house in rural Vermont, a seasoned midwife named Sibyl Danforth takes desperate measures to save a baby’s life. She performs an emergency cesarean section on a mother she believes has died of stroke. But what if Sibyl’s patient wasn’t dead-and Sibyl inadvertently killed her? One of the best books I have ever read! Had me reading as fast as I could in order...more

I gave my child a home birth, which is why I had this book recommended to me. I enjoyed it, aware that this novel would negatively impact midwives and naturally-birthing mothers, considering the publicity it received.. My mother sent it to me, having practiced midwivery, herself.. Still, this book was engaging, and not just for the personal reasons I stated.

Fantastic courtroom drama set in the '70s and told from the point of view of the defendant's 14 year old daughter. Great to read a book with a good ending for a change.

Great, quick, engaging read. Funny thing is, I've read some of this author and am not sure if he/she is a man or woman. The narrator of this book is a woman...and I'd be hard pressed to believe that a man could've pulled this off. The book made me want a peasant skirt and a garden;) Loved it.

Readable, interesting, but somewhat fluffy. I thought the character of Sibyl (the midwife) was sort of flat. She's portrayed as a sandal-wearing hippie during the whole book, and since the story is told through her 14 year old daughter, I didn't get to hear the midwife's perspective as much as I would have liked. Overall, I'd give it a B.
