Great book! An excellent description of the political opression that ocurred in this country. I love his descriptions of the neighborhoods of Newark in the first half of the 20th century. If you liked American Pastoral you'll like this as well.

Absorbing book: a piece of one of the darkest moments in America's recent history (the witch hunt period) a debate on ideas and ideals and an extraordinary character, Ira Ringold. Truly excellent.

L'un des meilleurs de Roth à mon goût. Rarement les ravages du maccarthysme n'auront été exposés avec autant de talent et d'intelligence

A difficult book to get into but very rewarding in the end- a study of selfishness and folly.

A good read if you're interested in the political and social climate in 1950s USA, but if you're short on time, you might want to read American Pastoral first. This one is different from Roth's other "Zuckerman novels" (including Pastoral) - somehow the characters are less alive and believable, or at least I don't find myself feeling for them that much. They're just characters.

Complex, artful and completely riveting. I didn't care for the last Roth I read, Exit Ghost, because the story and characters were just a platform for Roth's admittedly interesting literary rants. Here, we have the usual rants (literary and political) but we also have fully-drawn characters and an excellent rendering of place and time. As for the gossip-laden reviews,...more

most powerful and deepest Roth's novel. Bottom line of Roth's discoveries of man's weaknesses, put in a colorful political environment of McCarthy era.
