I didn't care for the last Roth I read, Exit Ghost, because the story and characters were just a platform for Roth's admittedly interesting literary rants. Here, we have the usual rants (literary and political) but we also have fully-drawn characters and an excellent rendering of place and time. As for the gossip-laden reviews, that aspect of the story is overblown, and who cares anyway?
