Beautifully written, heart-breakingly sad, a little misanthropic.

Well written, asture but a little self-consciously smart and too many aspirations to being an updated Gatsby. In reality it's little more than a slightly superior middle class soap with a rather predictable ending.

one of the best written books ever. Fantastic characters and a story that gets to you so hard.

Read this years ago and plowed through it again in a day. Phenomenal story and Yates was an amazing writer.

This book is really well written, but it's definately not a feel-good novel.

Where aspirations meet ugly vanity. The central characters of Frank and April hold a mirror to our own internal smugness and highlight how utterly self centred people can be. Brilliant.

Incredibly real and disturbing novel which is a truly engaging read. A young married couple trying to live the American dream in Connecticut are not at all content in their existence. Incredibly real and disturbing novel which is a truly engaging read. A young married couple trying to live the American dream in Connecticut are not at all content in their existence. You find yourself able to relate to aspects of the various characters as they muddle through life in a failing marriage, make plans to move overseas, being stuck in an unfulfilling job, falling into extra-marital affairs, and dealing with loss and tragedy. Written over 4 decades ago yet you could easily believe it was written last year. I strongly recommend this novel and I can't wait to see it as a movie.   hide

Americans need to grow up

Brilliantly lucid, dead cynical, something went wrong with society somewhere. There's one bad sentence in this book.
