As Obama steps into the presidents shoes, this book is a reminder of how very different things were in the USA not very long ago. An excellent read.

The build up to and the retelling of the Johnson vs Jeffries fight is biography at its most thrilling. The post-career chapters get a little too mired in a legal quagmire.

Intelligent, deftly written, and thoroughly engaging, and unfailingly honest about what we know and don't know about this fascinating historical figure. Also an interesting reality check: horrific racism isn't that far in the past. Highly recommended.
