Regardless of what critics like Helen Vendler say about her ("pornographic"), Sharon Olds is a poet who will touch you in one way or the other. Louise Glück does not have very kind things to say about Olds either, but this does not mean that these critics are right. Everyone has an agenda; a promotion of their own visions. Classic Sharon Olds - beautifully crafted, raw, and visceral. However, there are a few poems that are too cute and full of clever linguistic tricks. At times, one has the sense that she has gotten a tiny bit lazy in her success, and can get away with things that a poet with less prestige could not do. But mostly, these poems are so powerful that each one is like a punch in the gut - so...more
